How heavy will a Westie be?
West Highland White Terrier puppies are usually light with a healthy weight being between about 15 to 20 pounds (7.5–10 kg). What Colors do Westie puppies tend to be? Like their name suggests, these dogs are white in color all over. Some can have tan stains on their back or their feet. Having these tan markings would prevent you from showing these dogs at dog shows. It is seen as undesirable according to the breed standard. We personally think it can add a bit of a cute unique look to your puppy if you don’t want to shown them.
Westies have a medium coat length which consists of a soft undercoat and a rougher wirey outer coat. Due to their coat length, you may not want to keep them outside for long periods of time as they will find a nice patch of mud to roll in. This will increase the amount of time spent washing your adorable pup. How long will I need to spend Grooming my Westie?
As this dog is a medium haired breed, you will need to give them a little bit more attention than short haired breeds. You will usually need to you’re your Westie at the groomer for a hair trim every 3 months.
In between this, you will need to brush West Highland White Terrier puppies regularly to keep their hair from matting or becoming knotted. They can be prone to skin conditions so it is important that you use an appropriate shampoo when bathing them and to generally keep them clean. Good news is that they don’t tend to shed much hair. Do Westies have a long lifespan? Westie puppies will typically live to be 15 years of age but with the right nutrition and care it is not rare to see these breeds live beyond that. This all depends on how much effort you make to care for your westie. What sort of Temperament will a Westie have?
West Highland White Terrier puppies are typical little terriers. They are energetic and alert but also can make great companion dogs as they are a fun loving and devoted breed.
These small dogs love to run and play and will be happy to go with you on many walks. With them being terriers, they can become very possessive over toys and food.
This can mean at times they may not be compatible with your other animals or young children unless introduced and socialized as a puppy. Westies are tough little dogs that consider themselves as little guard dogs. They do well in all weather conditions and you need to give them a lot of room to run and play.
Keep in mind that they need to be taught not to dig from a young age, otherwise your favourite patch of grass may become your favourite hole in the yard. Westies are very devoted to their owners and will often follow you around but rarely can they be considered lap dogs. Westies are energetic, active little dogs that will love for you to take them on walks at least daily but twice daily would be better. With large amounts of energy, these pups love to play and have a tumble with older kids, often for long periods of time. Having a large yard will suit them best as they love to explore but they need to be well fenced as they do tend to be diggers when they get bored. So good in fact that they would have made Steve McQueen proud. Am I the Ideal owner for West Highland White Terrier puppies? Despite their size, you will need a fair bit of room for your Westie to run and play. Therefore if you live in an apartment, they are not recommended. They do best in a family situation (with older children), with a yard so they can play and roam around.
Ideally you must be willing to walk and exercise a Westie. They are adventurous so will be up for many different activities like hiking or will be happy with just a walk around your local park. Westies do love your attention but can be fairly independent. They tend to do ok being the only dog in the home as well as being left alone (as long as it isn’t for too long).
