Taking care of a Puppy,
How can it be made easier?

taking care of a puppy 01

Taking care of a puppy is not as easy as it may first appear. When you pick up your new little 8 week old cute puppy, it can be a daunting experience once you get home and you will probably have many questions you need answered. What does your pup need? What’s good for them? What’s bad for them?

The best thing to do when you get your puppy is to make an appointment with your veterinarian. Your vet will be able to give your pup a complete check over and make sure it’s healthy and well.

They will also provide you with some general tips on taking care of a puppy.

One of the most important jobs you have as the parent of your new little pup is to protect them from any parasites and diseases.

Your veterinarian will recommend the right vaccination for your puppy and be sure to purchase and choose the right product to prevent against Puppy Worms and Fleas.

These parasites can lead to many problems including diarrhea, vomiting and in some instances can be fatal.

So it is easy to see why it is important to have some kind of parasite control and prevention method in place to keep your friend healthy.

This also includes being vaccinated against Distemper in your lovable pooch. This disease can cause serious harm to your pup without the essential protection. Passed on through the respiratory system, it is hard to avoid without being vaccinated against.

During the first few months of taking care of a puppy you will mostly likely find that your pup tends to chew and suffer from Puppy Teething Pain as their new adult teeth come through their gums.

This is unfortunately something that comes with growing up but there are different ways to ensure your pup doesn’t destroy your favourite pillows or are not in too much pain.

taking care of a puppy 02 Commonly your little puppies can have diarrhea issues when they are young. Puppy Diarrhea can be caused by many things, some which are more serious than others.

This can unfortunately be one of the more messy jobs as far as taking care of a puppy goes but it is important to know why your puppy is unwell and to treat this problem seriously as any extended fluid and nutrition loss in your puppy is serious and could be a symptom of Parvovirus.

Microchips

One thing that is every puppy owner’s nightmare is for your pup to get lost or worse yet, stolen. The only way you can avoid this, other than having adequate fencing, is to microchip and have a tag on your puppy.

taking care of a puppy 03 A microchip is a small information chip that contains yours and your puppy’s details which is implanted between a dog’s shoulder blades. When it is scanned, this permanent device will show that you are this puppy’s owner.

Tip:We recommend making this a top priority when first getting and taking care of a puppy as we’re sure you’ll be devastated if your pup disappears suddenly.

Desexing

taking care of a puppy 04 Breeding with your pooch may have been something you had in mind when you bought your new puppy. This can be a great thing but ensure you educate yourself intensively before making any decisions.

If you don’t plan to have a litter with your pup it is best to de-sex them.

Generally most veterinarians recommend the procedure to be done at 6 months of age for both males and females. De-sexing will not only eliminate any unwanted pregnancies and reduce bad behaviour but will also decrease the chance of your puppy getting some serious diseases as an adult including some cancers.
