What breeds are in the Herding Dog Group?
There are quite a few breeds in the Herding dog group and they all have the natural ability to round up others. You may have already seen some particular herding breeds that have the great ability to control the movements of other animals and are a great help to many farmers. The animals that this group commonly herds are sheep and cattle but can be known to herd other animals as well. Most types of Herding Dogs have the great abilities of endurance, speed, agility and usually work tirelessly to get your jobs done. They manage to control and herd your animals in many ways which can be typical to the herding groups. For instance the “Heelers” get their name from the way they herd your animals by nipping at their heels. While other breeds may be more inclined to stare down your live stock and move them that way. Other breeds use a combination of different herding ways which may also include leaping and jumping around your animals.
As your family pet, they still can have a tendency to herd, this will usually be towards your young children (which may come in handy when trying to get all your kids inside for dinner!). As an owner of a herding dog you’ll find them to be affectionate and loyal companions. It is important to remember that they will require you to give them a lot of exercise and they regularly love to be given a task to complete.
We haven’t come across many from the herding dog group that would turn down the chance to play fetch. You will find this a great way to keep them active around the family home in combination with daily walks. Tip: It’s a great idea to get your herding dog involved in activities. Your different types of herding dogs usually excel in both obedience classes and dog sports! This is not only a great way for you to keep them fit and healthy but is an excellent way to bond with your dog.
