Are the Classic Kong Toys still the best?

The Classic Kong Toys are the original Kongs and in our opinion one of the best dog toys on the market to keep your loving dog entertained.

They have a hollow “beehive” shaped design which
is made of a tough natural rubber. The great part is that they are strong enough to take the jaw
strength of even your toughest pooch.

These Kong toys have a great reputation amongst dog owners, trainers and veterinarians as being a fantastic way to keep your dog amused and benefit them in other ways including dental care.

What benefit do the Classic Kong Toys have for your dog?

The multiple benefits of the Kong toys are what make these toys so great. The Classic Kong Toys help keep your dog’s teeth clean when they chew on the natural rubber. Your pooch will also keep active as they play around with it trying to get the treats out. The Red Rubber Kongs are really strong and puncture resistant but if your dog has an extra tough jaw, you can always use the Black Rubber Kong which is designed to survive the hardest of chewers.

What are the different ways to use the Classic Kong Toys with your dog?

A great way of introducing and encouraging your dog to use the Classic Kong is to place treats inside the hollow end of the toy. Not only will this keep your pup occupied but we find watching them try so hard to get the treats out is lots of fun. It is important to find the right treat as far as size and taste goes. Obviously if your dog struggles too much to get the treat out with no reward they will become bored with the Kong.

At first it is best to find a treat that will fit in the Classic Kong and is able to be removed by your dog relatively easy until they get the hang of it. Once they master the easy to get treats, it is time to find them some more challenging treats.

Obviously if you have to struggle to squeeze the treats inside your pooch will have no chance of getting them out unless they try to tear the Kong
to shreds. That will result in you being out of
pocket some cash for the ruined Kong.

You might want to use treats that have a stronger smell to them to help your pooch figure out that
you are putting them inside the Classic Kong.
Treats we have found work well are liver treats, regular dog biscuits and peanut butter.

On those hot summer days it can be a fantastic idea to freeze a cool treat inside as well which will keep your dog cool and occupied for longer.

The other fun use of the Classic Kong is using it as a fetching toy for you to throw for your dog. If your pup is great at fetching they will be kept guessing with the Kong. They are quite bouncy and due to their beehive shape design they can go in any direction which can be really fun to watch your dog try to pick up. Just another way to get some energy out of those dog’s who never seem to run out of puff.

What sort of dog does the Classic Kong Toy suit?

In short, all dogs can really benefit and enjoy these toys. They come in multiple sizes and in different strengths and therefore can suit everything from your Chihuahua to your Great Dane. Of course some dogs will like them more than others but there is many ways to entice them to use it such as placing your dog’s favorite food inside.

As long as you choose the right size and strength of Kong for your dog then you shouldn’t have any problems. If you do get the wrong one it is possible your dog may not be interested in it especially if your tiny Pomeranian is trying to chew on a Black Extra Large Rubber Kong. Also if you have a large sized dog, the Red Rubber Kong likely won’t be strong enough. They will possibly tear the Kong and the loose pieces of rubber can cause some problems. Keeping it around may lead to your dog consuming pieces of it which can cause digestive problems, so best to get rid of it straight away.

The other downfall is if your pooch regularly barks at their food. This could be quite annoying for you as your dog will bark for as long as there is treats inside the Kong. If your dog already barks at their bowl of food, it is likely that this toy may not be ideal.

The price of the Classic Kong Toys varies according to what size and type you get. The Red Rubber Kong also known as the Classic Kong has a softer rubber. The prices range from about $5 - $15 US dollars depending on which size you get.

The Black Rubber Kong also known as the Extreme Kong is a harder rubber and as a result is more expensive. The price of this one ranges from about $7 - $16 depending on the size you get.

The Internet is most likely where you will find the Classic Kong Toys cheapest, with EBay usually the best place to find cheap Kongs. However, if you don’t like the idea of shopping on the net you might be able to find them at your local pet store.
